In 1996 the Dutch Trauma Nursing Foundation (STNN is the Dutch abbreviation) was formed. This was done to introduce the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) in the Netherlands, which was performed by the Committee Trauma Nursing Netherlands (CTN/NL), in collaboration with the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) and the CTN/UK.

The primary goal of the Dutch Trauma Nursing Foundation is to improve the general quality of nursing in Emergency Departments, and specificly to trauma-patients.
To establish this, the STNN introduced the TNCC in the Netherlands, especially for nurses from Emergency Departments and other nurses that may contribute to the caring of trauma-patients.
The purpose of the course is to provide the student with cognitive, core level knowledge and psychomotor skills.
The TNCC was initiated in 1986 by the ENA in the United States (ENA/US). It is fully standardised and coherent with courses for other disciplines in trauma-care, such as the Advanced Trauma Life Support-course for doctors and the Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support-course for ambulance-personel.

At this moment, the STNN also provides the Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course and the course in the Manchester Triage System.
